Lindau is a city located in Bavaria, Germany, south of the country near the borders with Austria and Swiss. Its name means "island where lime trees grow". Although the city modern develops in the continent, its old historic center located on this small island on Lake Constance, Lake Constance, which accessed via two bridges, one of them railway.
Its history dates back to the 9th century. In that then it was not a city but a nunnery founded, according to some stories, by an earl in gratitude for being rescued from a shipwreck. The only remains of the old convent are in the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady. Lindau was proclaimed an imperial city only in 1275. A beginning of the XIX century the city was connected by means of the bridge and the railway in full industrial development.
Its old town is precisely a site charming and really worth your visit and which I will refer to in this post.
I would like to describe here some of its main points whose images, as you can see, speak for themselves and give those 8 reasons that in my opinion justify a visit to this Wonderful city.
1.- The lake walk, ”Seepromenade” and its small marina. A place that invites you to a quiet and relaxed walk and from where you can see a wonderful landscape of the Bodensee with the Alps as a frame and in a pleasant atmosphere where there is no shortage of people who liven up the day with their music..
2.- Reichsplatz. It owes its name to the fact that Lindau was an imperial city until the 19th century. This busy square, right on the edge of the lake, It is the main meeting center of the island. It used to be formerly the fish market square. Here visitors congregate who can enjoy its many picturesque cafes., restaurants and the colorful and well-preserved facades of the hotels and buildings that contain this beautiful open space.
Also in this square you can start a tour in a small tourist train through the ancient city in a walk of approximately 25 minutes.
3.- Mangturm. This magnificent tower, on the edge of the lake promenade, it is the old lighthouse of the city. Built in the 13th century, it was an important point in the medieval Lindau fortification as an observation and defense point.. Ascending to it, views of the city of Bregenz in Austria and the Rhine Valley in Switzerland are obtained.. On his wall you can read: “For the protection and defense of the seaport – a mighty landmark of the former free imperial city of Lindau”. It is probably one of the most photographed towers in the city. In the mid-nineteenth century a new lighthouse was built and this tower ceased to function as such., expanding by one level and being covered with colorful glazed bricks. The extensive braid that falls from one of its highest windows is remarkable.
4.- Entrance to the port of Lindau, the Lighthouse and the huge figure of the Bavarian Lion they frame the entrance to the city port and give it a special character. It was finished in 1856 and this date is carved on the pedestal that supports the Lion in Roman numerals "MDCCCLVI". The Lion weighs approx. 50 tons. It is possible to visit the lighthouse from whose terrace you get great views.

The Cathedral of Our Lady is the city catholic church. Its existence dates back to the 9th century but the church The current one was built in Baroque style in the 18th century after the fire of the city of 1728.
The Protestant church of San Esteban dates from the 12th century, undergoing a transformation to the Baroque style first and then to the Rococo in the 18th century
