Camaiore, in the Italian Tuscany, today with more than 30.000 population, It is the town where he was born one of my great-grandparents, Michele, with all the excitement that caused me to walk the streets of where they come from part of my roots, I would like to tell and show the magic of this small town, neighbor to Lido di Camaiore and belonging to the province of Lucca. Share the feelings that causes the place and its people. For a people is not only its architecture and parks, is also its people, their traditions, their way of life.

Camaiore enter by Via Italica since Lido Camaiore It is already deep into the adventure. A narrow street flanked by towering trees appear to be transporting us through the tunnel of Time.
Although my visit was in winter, even it showed green around as it is commonly in Tuscany.
The slender trees alongside the driveway, They seemed even more bare of leaves high in the winter season.

As we approach the small, historic city center, they start to
aparcer on one side and the other of the road, features homes - villas – mostly in one or two levels with their roofs to 4 waters, Also typical of this area and contrasting with the mountains and the green, resulting in a superb code.

Once in the center, You could start the visit based on the Comune di Camaiore, center of city government. A classic building that can be accessed and even request a visit, CAD drawings and information of the city and the area.

Surely more than one bore the name Ceragioli, curiosity could ask.

You may notice applied on most doors to houses and adjacent buildings to the plaza of the various source symbols, some belonging to the Society of Jesus latter seem to give a blessing and welcome visitors or entering the dwelling.

interesting building, a few meters from the Comune, we find the Church of Mary Asunta, founded in 1278, except its Romanesque bell tower that began to build in 1350, square and with a clock on the facade toward the square.

It was rebuilt after the earthquake 1535, maintaining its Romanesque style. Although the baroque style in the eighteenth century incororpora, in the twentieth century his appearance was brought back to its original Romanesque Style. The plant of the church is Latin cross, three ships covered with vaults. The dome adorned with magnificent frescoes.

Before continuing Via Andreucceti to go to the Benedictine Abbey of San Pietro, worth walking the historic center narrow streets invite to a relaxed tour, enjoying your lovely business where even a local vegetable attracts us for order and its colorful stained glass window.

Enthusiasm for meet and know the church where he was baptized my great-grandfather Michele, I take up the Church Saint John the Baptist and St. Stephen, in Via Pieve (Parish, in Italian).
Really worth a few away 3 kilometers from the historic center to the east south for the reunion with the roots and also to visit a magnificent church of Century X in very good condition.

To reach the Church of St. Giovanni Battista and Santo Stefano should be taken first via Roma, until via di Rossi, then via di Rossi until the end of the street and then left onto Via Santo Steffano about 100 meters finally right onto Plaza Don Renzo Gori.

It is a Romanesque church, its construction makes a reference dating from the tenth century. Counts as the first church in the region from which Christianity has spread in Camaiore and surrounding air. Throughout the centuries the building was restored and enlarged while retaining its Romanesque imprint.

Its main facade acquires a unique perspective from the access stairway. IMG_6325 IMG_6348

It is a church basilica with three naves court with wooden deck pissed off.

The interior houses a baptismal font, a marble sarcophagus of Roman origin of the second century and a triptych of Battista worthy to admire Pisa. In the quiet of this space a mystical air that invites prayer or simple contemplation of its architecture breathes.

The pastor kindly look between the baptismal books page where IMG_6710It stood Baptism of my great-grandfather Michele, It was a very exciting moment for me of course.

Churches were, prior to the creation of the Civil Registry, the places where they were settled births of people through registration in the minutes of Baptism.
Hence the great importance and value that these books have in the community and in most churches are preserved responsibly and as a true treasure.

3km from the historic center of Camaiore have been worth.

Very close, a few meters from the church, I could not stop closer to Pieve di Camaiore 20, exact address where there was the house where my great-grandfather. There exists today a home, Clearly certainly very different from those times.
